Tension over Iraq boosts sales of books on the topic
|
17-Feb-2003 - |
The tense situation in Iraq has boosted the sales of books about the Gulf region in this Chinese capital city.
Many bookstores reacted to the soaring demand by setting up special counters for these books, which are becoming inceasingly popular as the situation heats up.
The sudden drop in temperatures following the Spring Festival holiday has not deterred readers. One bookstore, situated in Beijing's thriving commercial Wangfujing district, features more than 30 books on the subject. Titles such as "War clouds hovering over Iraq", "The Special Forces of the United States", and "Inside the US Armed Forces" are favorites. In Xidan, the city's largest bookstore, some 25 books including "Prominent Figures in the Mid- East", "The History of the Gulf War" and "The Anti-terrorism Era" are on display in a newly-established section called "Focus on the Gulf", along with several editions of maps of the region.
According to Qin, a salesman, the special section was set up on February 9, and since that day, Xidan has sold 30 to 40 of the books per day.
