Textile: no higher duties, more disciplines
|
19-Apr-2005 - People's Daily |
The Ministry of Commerce has denied the rumor that the Chinese government is considering any plan to impose even higher duties on Chinese textile exports.
Lu Jianhua, director with the Foreign Trade Department, Ministry of Commerce, insisted that Chinese exports of textile and clothing be generally increasing steadily, which has neither posed any threat nor showed any upsurge as some foreign markets had warned, although increase in exports beyond expectation and what is thought to be reasonable has taken place in some individual businesses or markets.
His remarks have been echoed by Cao Xinyu, Vice Chairman of China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles, who refuted the allegation that China has enjoyed more benefits from the global market integration of textile.
However, both of them recognize the importance of building a more disciplined textile industry. Lu thinks the new measures to be taken likely include policies facilitating brand promotion, marketing and advertising of Chinese enterprises on the overseas market.
Meanwhile, he said, there will also be incentives to brand building, technical transformation and industrial upgrading.
He has given no timetable or details of these measures.
