|

It is a pagoda of Southern Song Dynasty. Stunning view of the Qiantang River and West lake.
Liuhe Pagoda, one of the main attractions of Hangzhou, was reopened to the public after restoration work lasted about a year. The Liuhe Pagoda (or Pagoda of six or harmonies) is the oldest standing pagoda in Hangzhou. Already along the city 's outskirts, the 60 -meter high octagonal pagoda is easily accessible at short distance from the city. It served as a lighthouse back in the days (around 1200) when Hangzhou was the center of commerce along the Grand Canal. Today the Pagoda provides a sanctuary for those who want a relaxing, carefree Hangzhou. The grounds provide for walk with its charming numerous sculptures, bells and shrines. This place is considered the better panoramic view of the Qiantang River Tidal Bore (mostly in September).
Liuhe Pagoda attracts many visitors, not only because it is a fascinating example of ancient Chinese architecture, but also for the wonderful views across the Qiantang River and, (more distant) the famous West Lake. Located on Yuelun Hill, about 6,3 km from the south of downtown Hangzhou, the attraction is easily reached by taxi or bus. The original version of the Pagoda was built in 970 AD, to control and calm the tidal bore of the Qiantang River (besides the function of lighthouse for sailors of the river). Liuhe Pagoda in 1121 was completely destroyed during a war, but then was rebuilt in 1165, on initiative of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
The name Liuhe comes from the six Buddhist Ordinances and also refers to the 6 directions (heaven, earth, north, south, east, and west ). Today Liuhe Pagoda is more than a single pagoda, in fact, it is now also known by the name Liuhe Pagoda Scenic Area. It is composed of 4 areas, Liuhe Pagoda Area, Kaihua Temple Area, Liuhe Stele Pavilion and Liuhe Pagoda Garden. About one year ago, the Pagoda was temporarily closed in order to carry out important work of conservation and maintenance of the structure. Recently, the Pagoda was reopened to the public, now it is still more shining, to the delight of the tourists who come to visit. |
