25-Apr-2002 - |
As the largest port city in northern China and an economic giant with sustainable growth, Tianjin has had strong appeal for overseas investors since China joined the World Trade Organization. The municipal government approved 163 foreign-funded ventures in the first quarter of this year, up 14.8 percent from the same period last year. The ventures had a combined contractual value of 1.168 billion U.S. dollars, a rise of 12.1 percent. Investors came from 25 countries and regions. Hong Kong took the lion's share with the contractual value of its investments reaching 685 million U.S. dollars. Agricultural ventures attracted a contractual value of 390,000 U.S. dollars in the first quarter, 1.8 times more than a year ago. The contractual value of service trade ventures increased by 1.5 times at 446 million U.S. dollars. Nearly one eighth of the approved projects, or 22, involved an investment of 5 million U.S. dollars each. The value of direct foreign investment made in the first quarter totaled 484 million U.S. dollars, up by 20.4 percent compared with last year. |
