Tianjin accelerates port construction
|
15-Oct-2002 - |
Tianjin, the leading port city in north China, will allocate 12 billion yuan (1.4 billion US dollars) to build infrastructure projects over the coming decade. According to a development plan, a man-made island covering an area of 30 square kilometers and a 10-km-long embankment will be built on the northern part of the Tianjin Port. Work on a deep-water channel accommodating 150,000-dwt ships started last month and is expected to be completed by 2005. An oil wharf with an annual handling capacity of 250,000-300,000 tons is to be built at the sea. Four sundry goods berths will be transformed into container berths to bring the port's annual container handling capacity to 1.7 million TEUs. Tianjin port is the fourth largest in China and serves as an outlet for goods from the central and western parts of China. It has 140 berths, of which 50 are capable of accommodating 10,000-dwt ships. The port has trade ties with 160 countries and regions. |
