Tianjin, the largest port city in north China, will begin building a new higher education district in its southwest this year.
Designed to house 200,000 college students, the district will cover about 1,347 hectares, according to the Education Committee of Tianjin.
Five of the city's colleges and universities will move into the district when construction is completed in 2010.
The first-phase of construction, expected to be completed by 2005, will cover 680 hectares and cost an estimated 3.6 billion yuan (435 million US dollars), according to the committee.
