Tour guide licensing system mooted in HK

Fifteen local tour guides have had their tourist guide passes suspended in the past three years, Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of Hong Kong Gregory So said Wednesday.
So told Hong Kong lawmakers Wednesday that during April 2008 and March this year, one tour escort's tour escort pass was revoked, six tour escorts' passes were suspended, and 15 tourist guides' passes were suspended for seriously breaching the Travel Industry Council's codes of conduct or directives, or committing serious criminal offenses. No tourist guide pass was revoked during the period.
So said introducing a licensing system for tour guides was part of a recently launched public consultation paper on regulating the tourism sector.
A consultation paper published on April 29 aims to solicit views from the trade and the public, to set the direction for the sustainable and healthy development of Hong Kong's tourism sector.
"One area for consideration is whether a licensing system for tourist guides should be introduced. We will draw up substantive reform proposals taking into account the views received in the consultation."
In the first quarter of this year, there were 20,291 people holding a tour escort pass, and 6,342 others holding a tourist guide pass. Among them, 3,311 people held both passes. |
