Tourist booming season begins in Tibet

10-Apr-2007 - chinanews.cn
As spring arrives, tourism industry in Tibet also booms. Local tourism bureau is regulating the market, renovating the scenic sites in advance and preparing for the May Day golden week holiday.

This year, spring season comes a little earlier than the past. The temperature is rising quickly. In addition, the Qinghai-Tibet railway has also started operation. All these factors make the tourist season in Tibet come earlier. Statistics show that during the first ten days after the Spring Festival, about 65,000 visitors came to Tibet, increasing by 20% from last year. Industrial analysts predict that some 200,000 people came to visit Tibet in March. Such figure doesn't include those who go to Tibet for work or for business.

At present, working staff at scenic spots, hotels and restaurants in Tibet are making preparation for the coming tourist booming season. At the same time, public institutions in charge of local public security, transportation, tourism, environmental protection, and price supervision have also launched a series of actions to regulate the tourist market.

Some scenic spots, including the Potala Palace, have finished renovation work and will open to the public during the May Day holiday. Some new tourist routes will also open at that time.

Like in the past, there will be a short supply of tickets for various scenic spots. In hotels, tourists will also find it hard to make reservations for accommodation. For popular tourist sites, such as the Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple, the problem will become even worse at the tourist booming season. In order to prevent the situation, local government is trying to work to divert some of the tourist flows.

Last year, the number of tourists coming to Tibet reached 2.51 million, a historical high level. This year, as the tourist booming season comes earlier and Tibet has improved its tourist facilities, it is expected that the record might be surpassed on the National Day holiday in early October of this year.
