Tulip Festival to Be Held in Qinghai
|
8-Apr-2004 - |
The city of Xining, capital of northwest China's Qinghai Province, will hold a tulip festival, presenting the world with over four million tulip plants and a strong ethnic flavor, said Cui Qingshan, vice director of the provincial tourism bureau.
The festival will be held on May 1-6, Cui said, and it will be Qinghai's eighth time to sponsor such an activity since 1993.
Tulips, scenic spots of the province as well as ethnic performances and local snacks will be displayed at the festival.
Qinghai hopes to better promote its special highland tourism resources to the world through the festival, Cui said, and boost the development of its economy.
Actually Qinghai is the birthplace of tulips, said Cui. It was spread to central Asia over 2,000 years ago and arrived in Europe in 1554, according to Cui.
There are still many legends about tulips in Qinghai and experts have discovered some new tulip species in its mountainous areas, he said. |
