26-Mar-2004 - |
China will soon let expatriates living in Hong Kong and foreign visitors have visa-free entry to the border town of Shenzhen as part of the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (Cepa), the deal that has seen China allow individual travellers to go to Hong Kong. About 800,000 people who make the trip annually should benefit, Shenzhen Tourism chief, Mr Chi Xiongbiao, said. An agreement between Hong Kong and Shenzhen will be signed next month, sources said. At present, expats and foreigners pay US$42 for a one-time visa, or US$110 for a multiple visa that lasts six months. The arrangement is expected to boost two-way tourism. More than 70 per cent of outbound travellers from the mainland stop in Shenzhen before coming to Hong Kong. Travel Industry Council chairman, Mr Ronnie Ho, said the new arrangement will mean new travel itineraries in the Pearl River Delta by tour operators. |
