10-May-2004 - |
Nanjing's week-long Fair of World Historical and Cultural Cities has come to a close. The event has attracted municipal leaders from 21 renowned cities from China and around the world. Various cultural activities were held to mark the end of the Expo. The closing ceremony was kicked off by a motorcycle parade. Then, on behalf of nearly 7 million Nanjing citizens, more than a hundred young girls greeted guests with flowers and colorful flags. They were followed by folk art performers who presented songs, dances and acrobatics with the unique characteristics of China's ancient capitals. Representatives from 21 world-class cities, including Barcelona, Florence, Melbourne, St. Petersburg and 11 from China gathered in Nanjing for the Historical and Cultural Cities Expo. Nanjing is one of China's prestigious Four Ancient Capitals, which also include Beijing, Xi'an and Luoyang. The festival aims to culturally enlighten Nanjing citizens and present the ancient southern capital as a world-class historical and cultural city. China now has 101 listed state level historical and cultural sites and 29 on UNESCO's World Heritage List. |
