LUOYANG, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Yang Shujun of Chinese Taipei claimed the title of the women's 51 kilogram division here on Saturday, with a thrilling 4-3 victory over China's gold medal hopeful Wu Jingyu.
It was the first time that Wu lost both in the domestic and international competitions since she won the first gold medal for China's taekwondo in the Asian Games in 2006.
"I am still confident and this failure won't destroy my mood or leave any shadow in my mind," said the 21-year-old Wu.
Wu Jingyu, world champion in 2007, seemed not used to the electronic mask during the final. After Wu leveled the score 3-3 in the third set, Yang took a decisive one point by kicking her opponent's chest to nail down the victory.
"This failure will do good to my preparation for the Olympics, because I can find my problems in strategy and techniques," Wu added.
"I didn't get used to the electronic mask, but I don't think that's the reason for my loss."
The 23-year-old Yang, bronze medallist in the worlds in 2007, did not regard Wu as her main opponent in the Olympics.
"I don't think Wu is the only opponent in the Olympics. She's outstanding, but I am not afraid of her, because there are many brilliant rivals in the Olympics," Yang told the press.
"I am confident and my advantage is the strong mentality. I don't think I am good at the strategy and I believe I still have room to improve myself."
The bronze medal was shared by L.L.Catalan of the Philippine and Kwon Eun Kyung of South Korea. |
