Yide Hotel is situated in a quiet little blind alley just a few minutes' walk from the main street, Nan Dajie. The guesthouse is a beautifully renovated courtyard house built in 1736 by a wealthy merchant during the reign of Emperor Qianlong. The old residence of Hou Wangbin originally consisted of six courtyards; No. 16 (upper yard), No. 14 (lower yard), No. 18 (study room) and No. 20 (carriage and horse yard) in Shaxiang Street, No. 9 Xishitoupo Lane (ancestral temple) and No. 6 Xiguojia Lane (garden). All rooms have air conditioning and heating, bathroom and large kang-style beds that are heated in winter.

I give the room slightly lower than 10 for cleanliness as I found an empty coke can under my bed. I thougt breakfast was a bit expensive. However I would definitely stay at Yide again because the staff are friendly and extremely polite and helpful. Also the hotel gives a feel for the traditional time with a unique and quiet setting. The location is excellent being in the center of Pingyao but not on the Main Street which could be a bit noisy. I loved the way they have furnished the rooms with Chinese style and simple bathroom.

a A well situated location. Excellent welcome and very friendly and helpful staff. Interesting but very functional shower/toilet! Food excellent, service sometimes slowish, but staff friendly and helpful in restaurant. Copious amounts of hot water available for showers and refreshments. The three day pass to places of interest is a good investment (inexpensive too) Good place to stay.

It was a fabulous experience to live some days in the traditional old chinese style! The architecture of the hotel and of the room is extremely interesting to whom likes to travel through the space and the times and enjoy the authentic culture and ambiances. Y De Hotel has a superb location in the ancient city and it is very quiety. We waked up with the birds singing. The staff is very very kind and helpful! They mostly speak english. The hotel offers transfer to the railway station for free. Everybody was very friendly, in the hotel and in the city! We feel so calm and safe like at home. Pingyao is a place unforgetable and chinese people is realy a must of friendship and kindness to us! I recommend Yi De Hotel, Pingyao and China! All superb!: people, food, landscape, architecture and culture. Before coming to China we had a completely different idea. Till now, we have loved China!

An EXCELLENT inn （客栈）fully renovated and modernized. Almost in the heart of the fortress, convenient, very comfortable, quiet and clean. Staff (all female and English speaking) is curteous, polite, helpful, efficient, always with a smile, including the manager. Overall, my impression on this hotel was good. The location and the kindness of its staff are the strongest points of the hotel. However, for the facilities provided, I think the hotel is overpriced. For example, it is the first hotel I stay in China, including 3 and 4-star hotels, which does not provide courtesy items such as sleepers and free tooth-brush. In short, I liked it, but I think it is overpriced.

WE were very happy with level of service and comfort at this hotel. We enjoyed our stay very much and would return again. If only one thing could be changed the quality of breakfast offered could be better with hot tea and coffee offered and perhaps some western items for a choice at breakfast such as toast or cereal. Otherwise we enjoyed the food at the restaurant very much, especially the local Hui style food.

Firstly I would like to say that we were very happy with the warm welcome we received after our long journey. The management and staff were very professional and attentive throughout our stay. We enjoyed the hotel ambience and decor which obviously had a great deal of thought and care put into it. We loved our bedrooms which were tastefully and unusually decorated. Having eaten in a number of restaurants in Pingyao we can honestly say we thought the food at the hotel (which came served on clean and pleasant porcelain) was better than all the other places we had eaten in (which included a number of main street restaurants). Most importantly, we believe the food and crockery had a high hygienic quality and the friendly restaurant service was excellent as well. The hotel is situated a little off the main street area but we did not find that to be a problem and we would have absolutely no hesitation in staying there again, nor would we hesitate in recommending this hotel to friends.

Staying at the Yide Hotel was a wonderfull experience. The location is perfect. The hotel is directly within the old city walls and installed in a beautiful and authentic palace which belongs to the scenic spots of the city. Entering the courtyard of the hotels send you back into the Chinese history. All aspects of the hotel (furniture, decoration etc...)contribute to this fantastic atmosphere. We were at Yide Hotel in winter (November 2008) and despite of the real cold temperature outside and the age of the building, the room and especially the bathroom were very warm. The bed, in a typical chinese imperial style, was huge and comfortable. to complete the picture, a remarkable service: free pick-up service from the railway station, friendly manager, english spoken by the staff. One of the best hotels in China I stayed in.

Yi De hotel is well located away from the busy main street which means it is quiet, but being an old historic building the level of sound proofing means that noise by other guests and staff in the morning can intrude a little. Breakfast is not included and the hotel restaurant is expensive by local standards. The main issue is that the room was very small with no place to store luggage or for a small table. The bathroom is also very small. If more than one person, I think it would have been awkward. However, the building is beautiful and the staff very helpful with the manager speaking good English. I did manage to get locked out though having returned after midnight. That is not uncommon in Pingyao I discovered. If you want authenticity and charm, this is the place. If you want more creature comforts, look elsewhere. PS. The wireless network is excellent for those keeping in touch by computer.
