Beijing Divorces Tend to be More Amicable
|
14-Mar-2003 - |
More and more couples in Chinese capital city of Beijing are able to keep their coolness when their marriages break up as compared with in the past when many fought over property or other issues, reports Beijing Youth Daily. Li Jin, a judge working for the Eastern District courthouse in Beijing municipality, handled six divorce cases after last week's Spring Festival holiday. Except for one case where the suit was withdrawn, the other five couples amicably reached agreement on divorce and soon parted with each other. According to Li, in more than 70 percent of about 1,000 divorce cases handled by the courthouse each year, the parties concerned kept sober-minded through the proceedings instead of bogging down over issues like property division as often occurred in the past. Li attributed this remarkable change partly to improved household living standards, especially the economic strength of women in the family. Increased economic capability had drastically reduced people's worry about their future after divorce, added Li. Nowadays, household property is no longer limited to a dwellingplace and bank deposits, but includes a wide range of items from automobiles to shares, stocks and treasury bonds. Another reason behind the change, Li believed, was that couples were no longer willing to waste time arguing over details once they decided to break up. Therefore, "Being irreconcilable in character" are often the only reason judges are merely given while handling divorce cases. |
