Beijing attracts close to 5 mln tourists in Spring Festival

Beijing received 870,000 tourists from elsewhere in China during the week-long Lunar Chinese New Year festival, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.4 percent,the Beijing Municipal Tourist Bureau announced here Wednesday. Tourist income generated by local tourist departments in the past seven days totaled 1.83 billion yuan (about 220 million US dollars), up by 10 percent over the same period last year. Of the total, 1.6 billion yuan (192 million dollars) came from tourists from other Chinese provinces. The remainders was contributed by local visitors. Local travel agencies sent 32,000 local residents on overseas tours this year, a rise of 15.4 percent over last year and an all time high. Beijing hosted five snow and ice festivals during the seven-dayholiday, which had drawn 110,000 visitors, doubling last year's figure. Local parks played host to 5 million Chinese and foreign visitors in the Lunar New Year holiday period, up 10 percent over last year. Temple fairs hosted by the three major parks in Beijingsold out more than 2 million tickets. |
