Beijing invests heavily in transport

Beijing municipal government will plough 4.5 billion yuan (544 million US dollars) this year into improving the city's transport network, a senior official said at the 12th Beijing Municipal People's Congress. The work will start this year on seven subway and urban railway lines, aiming to build over 150 kilometers of urban railways by 2008, when Beijing will host the Olympics, the China Daily reported. This will expand the total length of urban railway lines in the capital to 300 kilometers, Shen Baochang, director of the Beijing Development Planning Commission, was quoted as saying by the newspaper as saying. |
