Beijing's First Public Transportation Hinge Officially Starts Operation

7-Jul-2004 -
Beijing's first public transportation hinge officially began operating yesterday. With this hinge, passengers don't need to wait for the buses on the vehicle lanes, or strive to catch up with the buses. Buses don't have to wait in long lines to get in the stop.

The traffic around the Beijing Zoo is very heavy, and there is always congestion there. People expect the public transportation hinge to play an important role in alleviating traffic jams in this area.

On the ground floor of the hinge, ten bus terminals are neatly arranged. Every line has its own passage to get in and get out of the terminal. And on the underground floor, there is a display indicating every bus line's route.

Passengers can follow the indicator to the right bus stop without leaving the hinge. It's safer for passengers and easier to manage.

"It's not crowded at all and is very cool here. So I don't care how long I have to wait for the bus."

"I almost forgot what I felt before. When waiting for the bus, I always felt exhausted."

However, since the ground space of the public transportation hinge is very large, those who just bought many clothes to replenish their stocks at the nearby clothes wholesale market felt it inconvenient to walk quite a far distance to change buses.
"It's inconvenient. It's too far away, and I have to walk nearly one kilometer more than before to get to the bus stop."

And it's difficult for those who are not familiar with the new bus lines to find the new bus stops. A guide at a nearby bus stop says she received seventy to eighty passengers asking where the new bus stops are. But she says even though only two bus terminals have been diverted to the public transportation hinge, the congestion in this area has been alleviated to some extent.

"Originally, the bus terminals were here. Sometimes when several buses draw up at the station, the following buses couldn't pull in and had to wait in a long queue. But today the situation is getting better. You know, usually, the traffic is the heaviest on Monday. But today there are not so many buses waiting to pull in as before."

It is reported that by next Thursday, another eight bus lines whose terminals are in the Beijing Zoo area will be diverted to the hinge.

And there are two bicycle parking lots in the southeast and southwest corners of the hinge, with a parking capacity of three thousand bicycles. And the underground floor can park nearly four hundred vehicles free-of-charge.
