Beijing's per capita GDP exceeds $5,000

Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics and Beijing Urban Survey Organization of the National Bureau of Statistics jointly released on January 22nd that Beijing's per capita GDP exceeded US$5,000 in 2005, marking that Beijing's productivity has reached the level of moderately developed countries.
Per capita GDP of Beijing's permanent residents reached 44,969 yuan (US$5,457) in 2005, rising 8.1% over the pervious year and 1.9 times that of 2000 based on comparable prices.
In 2005, per capita disposable income of Beijing's urban residents amounted to 17,653 yuan, growing 12.9% year on year. After removing inflation factors, the actual growth was 11.2%. Per capita disposable income of the 20% low-income residents increased 15.9%, 4.7 percentage points higher than the growth rate of the 20% high-income residents.
The Engel's coefficient of Beijing's urban residents reached 31.8% last year and that of its rural residents was 32.8%, declining 4.5 percentage points and 3.9 percentage points, respectively, compared with 2000.
The Gini coefficient of Beijing's urban dwellers remains bearable at present and is not big enough to cause a social conflict outbreak.
Beijing conducted a public poll on the construction of a harmonious society in 2005, finding out that 54.6% of the surveyed people deem the city a harmonious society currently. 74.1% expect better lives in the coming five years and nearly 70% (68.2%) admit they are now living a happy life.
