Beijing tightens security on road checkpoints for Olympics

10-Jul-2008 -
BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Beijing from next week will start to deploy security staff at hundreds of checkpoints on road entries to the city in tightened Olympic security, according to the municipal public security bureau.

The photo taken on July 8 shows the Olympic-exclusive bus lane in Beijing marked with the Olympic Rings. From July 20 to Sept. 20, the leftmost lanes of some streets in Beijing will be marked as Olympic lanes. In a written announcement, the bureau said armed police with explosive sniffer dogs and equipment such as electric metal detectors and security scanners would be posted at road checkpoints. These were to restrict suspects and dangerous cargo from entering the Olympic host city.

According to the bureau's security plan, the first defense line is at road entries along the city's borderline, where police may stop trucks and trains for security checks on suspicious people and cargo.

The second line is composed by police checkpoints at road entries linking Beijing's six countryside districts with the urban area. Inner-city defense posts are being scattered on the ring roads.

All vehicles with licenses registered outside Beijing are subject to security checks at the checkpoints. They can only enter the city with road-entry certificates and valid documents. Police would shut down road entries in time of contingencies, the bureau said.

Beijing has also built a security network with the neighboring city of Tianjin and Hebei Province in its Olympics security plan. This requires the respective public security departments to standardize the use of guns and coordination in preventing and solving crimes.
