Beijing to curb particle pollution
|
21-Apr-2003 - |
Beijing's environmental authorities have put the issue of suspended particles at the top of their agenda, China Daily reported recently. Shi Hanmin, director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection, said the bureau will work to reduce the density of suspended particles from the current 150 micrograms percubic meter to 100 micrograms by 2008. The director said that pollution caused by suspended particles has become a bottleneck in improving the capital's environment. On 89 percent of the days last year, suspended particles were the main pollutant in the city, the newspaper said. Shi said that dust from construction sites is a major cause of the pollution. The municipal government has required building firms to establish a special fund to control dust pollution in their bids for projects. Vehicles transporting garbage, mud and stones are also forbidden from entering the area within the Fifth Ring Road unless they are airtight, the newspaper said. |
