Beijing to seek international financing for subway construction

The Chinese capital is planning to raise international fund for the construction and operation of four subway lines with total length of 103.54 km, according to the municipal government. Construction of the No. 4, No. 5, No. 9 and No. 10 subway lines will cost about 50 billion yuan (US$604 million), and except the No. 9 line, the other three subway lines are supposed to be finished before 2008, when Beijing will host the Olympic Games, said Vice Mayor Zhang Mao at an investment promotion meeting Tuesday. Zhang pledged the government would bear 70 percent of the 50- billion yuan investment, mainly for tunnel construction and rail laying, and the remaining 30 percent would be from foreign investment who win the international bidding for the procurement and installation of subway carriages, other machinery and electronic equipment. Between 2004 and 2015, the municipal government will invest 107. 29 billion yuan (US$12.96 billion) in traffic and other infrastructure facilities, and private investors are welcome to participate in the construction and operation, the vice mayor said. |
