28-Dec-2001 - |
A new survey shows that the per capita green area in the Chinese capital has reached 36.08 square meters. Using remote sensing technology, staffers of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Parks and Woods recently carried out a comprehensive investigation of grass land and forested area in thecity's 18 districts and counties. The survey shows that the total acreage of forested area in parks and woodland has exceeded 26,000 hectares, nearly 6,000 hectares more than that in 1995. Beijing attaches great importance to afforestation as it has vowed to host a green Olympic Games in 2008. According to a plan, the vegetation cover rate in Beijing's mountainous area will be more than 70 percent, in the plains more than 25 percent, and the greenery cover rate in downtown zones will be 40 percent within five years' time, with the per capita green area reaching 45 square meters. Beijing built 112,000 hectares of forested land over the past five years, with the woods cover rate reaching 43 percent and the greenery cover rate in urban area reaching 36 percent.(Xinhua News Agency) |
