With the rapid economic development in Mainland China, the importance of helicopters in social activities is drawing more and more attention. The ongoing 2005 Shanghai Avionics Exhibition set up a special forum titled "Helicopter and 2010 Shanghai World Expo," on which experts and scholars from home and abroad made in-depth discussion about the development and application of helicopters in the Chinese mainland.

A former president of Helicopter Association International (HAI) said that helicopters play an important role in the modern society and have incomparable advantage in medical assistance, rescue, law enforcement, fire fighting, disaster reduction, emergency response, commercial support, sightseeing and transportation. He believes that China has a vast market for helicopter application in its metropolises like Shanghai and Beijing and also has great potential in helicopter production and design.

China World Helicopter Association representative Luo Youzhen said that in the Chinese mainland helicopter application is constrained by finance and air traffic control. With a view to increasing demand, Shanghai can take the lead in attempting to apply helicopters in urban areas. Luo revealed that Shanghai institutions such as the maritime rescue team have already possessed helicopters. The city should establish a platform for helicopter application in accordance with the principal of market operation. Departments covering medical treatment, traffic, police and fire fighting will be able to share this platform. In this way, the city will explore a new way for China's helicopter application.
