China to Invest in Ecology in Inner Mongolia

China will invest 3 billion yuan (361 million U.S. dollars) this year to improve the ecology of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Experts say the ecological deterioration of the region has become the major reason of strong sandstorms in north China recently.
In addition, the Chinese government urgently needs to improve the environment in the regions around Beijing to prepare for the 2008 Olympic Games.
Zhou Dehai, vice chairman of the regional government of Inner Mongolia, said investment in ecological protection in the region last year reached 2 billion yuan, the largest figure in China. However, before 2000 the fund was less than 100 million yuan each year.
The Chinese government is giving more attention to the ecological protection of the region. The fund will be used to plant trees and grass and control desertification.
Zhou said a total of 2 million hectares of grassland in the region will be protected and banned from farming this year and 66,667 hectares will be set aside for forage production to relieve the burden on natural grassland.
Ecological experts will supervise the projects and offer advice to ensure the success of the projects. A series of regulations have been made to prevent embezzlement and corruption, according to Zhou. |
