Chinese Premier, EU Troika Discuss Textile Disputes
|
12-May-2005 - China Radio International |
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao says resolving the textile trade dispute between China and the European Union requires concerted efforts by both sides. He told the visiting EU "troika" of diplomats in Beijing on Wednesday that China has imposed tariffs on textile exports and taken other steps to control export growth which have already been effective. He says China will take further economic measures to prevent an excessive growth of its textile and garment exports. He stresses that the two sides should strengthen dialogue and exchanges on an equal footing and seek an appropriate way to resolve the trade dispute while keeping the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership in mind. The three EU officials are Luxemburg's Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn, EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner and the British Ambassador to China, Christopher Hum. The EU representatives are in Beijing to discuss China's surging textile exports, the EU arms embargo against China and the Taiwan question. They also met with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing on Wednesday. The European Union has formally launched a 60-day investigation into the surging textile imports from China. The investigation could result in the imposition of quotas on imports of T-shirts, pullovers and a range of other textile products. China has criticized the EU's decision, saying it violates WTO trade rules. |
