THREE new initiatives to improve passenger transportation on the roads, railway and in the air are underway in Beijing.
The Beijing Transportation Bureau has launched a taxi reporting service to reduce negative tourist experiences in Beijing's estimated 67,000 taxis. Seventy hotels will act as hubs for passengers to record complaints or report taxi-related issues. The bureau said it would investigate all reports and enforce penalties.
Aside from cabs, Beijing Capital Airport will soon be accessible via a new subway line. Construction on the line began this week and, according to the Beijing Subway Corporation, will be completed by April 1, 2008. The line will be 28.1km long, extending from the airport in Beijing's east, to Dongzhimen station - a hub on the city's main subway network.
The General Administration of Civil Aviation announced it would open more overseas and domestic air routes to ease congestion in the skies. Beijing will open new international routes to Japan, South Korea and Mongolia. Domestically, second routes will be opened between Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and Shanghai and Hong Kong. China's air passenger numbers are expected to jump 15 per cent during the 2008 Olympic Games.
