The Third China Datong Yungang Tourism Festival will be held in Datong, Shanxi Province, from Aug.18-28, says Ji Mingde, a vice mayor of this north China city. The gala is co-sponsored by the provincial tourism administration and the Datong city government. During the festival, tourists can visit the Yungang Grottoes, one of the largest in China and a World Heritage site, a number of Buddhist temples, a section of the ancient Great Wall plus areas of natural scenery. A ceremony will be held to mark the 2,300th anniversary of the founding of Datong, one of China's leading 24 historic and cultural cities. Traditional music and dance from Central China enjoyed while sightseeing at the Yungang Caves, recently listed as a World Cultural Heritage site, are just one example of 20 new tourism possibilities offered up at the third China Datong Yungang Tourism Festival, the local municipal authorities said at the promotional press conference in Beijing recently. Located in Northern Shanxi Province, the city has a 2300 year history with more than 300 historic sites and attractions, the most famous being the Yungang Caves. A collection of stone carvings, the Yungang Caves have 510,000 sculptures of varying sizes, housed in 53 caves. The caves were listed as a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO on December 14,2001. According to the chief officer of local tourism bureau, the festival consists of 3 main elements - tourism, exhibition and trading exchange. Besides the famous manmade sites like the Yungang Caves, Shanhua Temple, Nine Dragon Wall, and the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, also known as the 'Oriental Leaning Tower of Pisa', tourists can visit the more than 50 naturally occurring tourist attractions of Datong during the festival. Exhibition activities focus on the celebration of Datong's 2,300 birthday. Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibitions as well as traditional local dancing and entertainment, are other attractions of this festival. In addition, visitors who are interested in Datong's business opportunities can attend promotional briefings, as well as new technology conferences sponsored by local companies, arranged to coincide with the festival. |
