Five U.S. Airlines Seek New routes to China

Five U.S. airlines have said that they are seeking to operate new nonstop flights between the United States and China beginning in March 2009.
American Airlines, the largest U.S. carrier, said it filed application Monday with the U.S. Department of Transportation to operate daily nonstop service between Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Beijing, China, starting March 25, 2009.
"The proposal route would offer one-stop service from 72 cities in 29 states and the District of Columbia via American's Chicago hub and would complement American's current daily service to Shanghai, China, from O'Hare," said the carrier in a statement.
Meanwhile, Continental Airlines has applied to fly between Newark, New Jersey, and Shanghai. US Airways is seeking to offer nonstop service between Philadelphia and Beijing.
Delta Air Lines Inc. has asked for the right to fly from Atlanta to Beijing and Shanghai, while Northwest Airlines Corp. filed to offer service between Detroit and the same two Chinese cities.
Earlier this year, the Department of Transportation gave United Airlines the right to operate a new daily nonstop flight from Washington Dulles International Airport to Beijing. |
