Former Imperial Hunting Ground Open to Tourists

4-Mar-2002 -
It used to be an imperial hunting field reserved for the rulers of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), but now it welcomes more than half million tourists each year.

The hunting ground, some 300 kilometers from Beijing, is attracting people who have grown tired of the convention scenic spots, and especially people living in Beijing and nearby areas.

So far, it has received 40,000 visitors from Beijing and Tianjin, said Jiang Haiyan, head of the local tourism administration

The official said that the former hunting ground boasts an ideal natural environment -- forest land with abundant species of plants and animals, and a clear lake. Horse riding, boating and skiing are available.

Needless to say, there is no hunting any more in the area, and every effort will be made to protect the environment and keep the ecological balance, said Jiang.

The hunting ground was established in 1681, during the reign of Emperor Kangxi, and it continued in operation for 140 years. Because the emperors frequently visited it, it is connected with many historic events.
