Funds Earmarked to Repair Flooded Roads
|
20-Jul-2003 - |
An extra 13 million yuan (US$1.6 million) in central government funding will go towards repairing roads washed away by flooding. The Ministry of Communications announced the new funding in Beijing on Friday, saying the money was earmarked for the 15 worst-affected provincial areas, including Anhui, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, and Tibet. Roads and bridges in these regions have been seriously damaged, disrupting traffic on some national highways. According to the ministry, floods, mudflows and landslides caused by heavy rain damaged 17 national highways, 48 provincial highways and many county and township roads, causing economic losses of 2 billion yuan (US$241.6 million). The ministry has issued two emergency notices to the national transport sector on disasters and road repairs during the flood season. Traffic safety inspections are also being carried out along roads near rivers and mountains. Safety signs and travel warnings have been posted along damaged roads in flood-hit areas. Most national highways blocked by the flooding in the 15 areas have been reopened. The water level at Hongze Lake on the lower reaches of the Huaihe River has been dropping steadily over the past few days, according to the flood control headquarters of East China's Jiangsu Province. Residents in the lake area who were evacuated from their homes are now being encouraged to return, officials with the headquarters said on Friday. |
