Globalization should better protect human rights: experts
|
11-Nov-2002 - |
Human rights should be better protected and cultures diversified in a globalized world, say experts attending an international symposium on oriental culture and human rights development, which ended in Beijing recently. Tian Jin, executive council member of the China Society for Human Rights Studies, said the trend to globalization could not be reversed but its negative impacts were very obvious in terms of marginalizing many developing nations and disadvantaged groups in developed nations. It is vital to better protect the human rights of disadvantaged people and establish a fair international political and economic order, according to Tian. Zheng Xiaoyun, research fellow of the Yunnan Provincial Academy of Social Sciences, said globalization would lead to a new age characterized by more communication and exchanges between different cultures, and it was critical to establish mutual understanding between different cultures in the globalization process. Dr. Maria Del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the intensifying trend in eradicating language, cultural and racial differences should be prevented from developing further. Alfonso Garcia De Paadin, Colonel General Staff of the Spanish Army, said globalization should not help multinational corporations reap excessive profits, leading to a huge disparity between rich and poor. Instead globalization should contribute to the sharing of resources, markets, wealth and cultural benefits among all countries in the world and provide more opportunities to all nations, he said. The symposium, jointly organized by the China Society for Human Rights Studies and China Foundation for Human Rights, was held from October 29 to 30, attracting some 70 human rights experts from 26 countries. |
