Japan gears up for a revival of tourism from the Chinese mainland

Two months after the earthquake and tsunami hit the coast of the Tohoku region in Northeastern Japan, a group of tourism industry representatives from Japan's Toyama Prefecture visited Beijing recently, aiming to promote local tourism to the much-blighted country.
"Although Japan suffered a lot from the earthquake, and the fallout from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant explosion is still not over, most parts of Japan are safe, including Toyama, and life after the earthquake hasn't changed," said Takakazu Ishii, governor of Toyama.
Situated roughly in the northern center of Honshu, Toyama boasts the world-famous Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the Kurobe Valley (a hidden scenic spot accessible by trolley), the Unazuki-onsen (one of the most famous hot springs in the Hokuriku region), the World Heritage Gokayama Village and national treasure Zuiryu-ji Temple.
The Japan National Tourism Organization Beijing Office also encouraged travelers to enjoy the seasonal pleasures of Hokkaido, one of the most popular destinations for Chinese tourists in the past.
According to the Beijing UTour International Travel Service Co, the price for a tour package in Hokkaido in June will be less than 5,000 yuan ($769), a reduction of almost 65 percent below pre-quake prices.
"We will continue to distribute the latest detailed and accurate information about travel to Japan, as well as to actively develop our promotional activities in order to encourage people to visit," said Yasuhiro Iijima, Chief Representative of the Japan National Tourism Organization Beijing Office. |
