More statistics confirm mainland importance to Hong Kong
|
22-Dec-2003 - |
SURGING mainland tourists will spend US$7.5 billion in Hong Kong next year, up a third on this year. That is a full two per cent of the territory's GDP, according to a study by the investment company CLSA. The company tips at least 12 million visitors to Hong Kong from the rest of China, a 20 per cent jump on this year. The startling figures are caused by relaxation of travel and foreign currency restrictions from September 1. The figures lead financial analysts to predict a real nine per cent growth in Hong Kong's gross domestic product in 2004. Mainland visitors are coming from farther afield, not just from Guangdong province, and are staying longer and spending more. The average stay has increased from 4.2 days to 5.3 days and shopping expenditure is up from US$430 in August to US$611 in November. Answering survey questions, 90 per cent of tourists said they would come again, people from Shanghai, Zhejiang and Beijing spent more on shopping than people from Guangdong, and 40 per cent said they would go to Macau as part of their Hong Kong trip. |
