The economy of China's northeast region has been accelerating in 2004 as the country pushes to rejuvenate one of the country's old industrial bases. Vice Chairman of National Development and Reform Commission Zhang Guobao told a press conference Wednesday in Beijing that the GDP of the three provinces in northeast China, Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning, hit 1.5 trillion yuan, or more than 180 billion US dollars, a 12 per cent increase over the year 2003. The official also said that the increasing percentage of foreign investment in the three provinces is higher than the national average. But, Zhang Guobao stressed that some structural problems still hinder the development of the local economy and the re-employment of the laid-off workers is still difficult. |
