Ocean Park takes Disney challenge head on

With Hong Kong Disneyland due to open the end of 2005, Ocean Park is not sitting pretty. Chairman Mr Allan Zeman aims to market the attraction as a world-class theme park focusing on marine life. Three American designers who designed US Knott's Berry Farm, Universal Studio and Disneyland are now working on its expansion plan. A two-phase complete facelift over about six years is planned. It includes more sea animals and shows, a new kids' world, a through-mountain train called Funicular', a water world, new theme restaurants and retail shops. A formal proposal will be presented to the government in the last quarter. The construction is expected to start in two years, with phase one scheduled to begin operation in 2008 and phase two to open in 2010. Mr Zeman emphasised: Ours will be an education and entertainment theme park based on marine life. This is what Disneyland does not have. Ocean Park also faces competition from the region, including the Fisherman's Wharf entertainment district in Macau and the world's tallest ferris wheel at 210m in Beijing equipped with restaurants, a theatre and other entertainment at the base. According to local news report, half of the world's top 10 parks are in Asia, bringing in up to 68 million visitors annually. |
