Part of Beijing-Zhuhai freeway closed due to cold weather

A section of the Beijing-Zhuhai freeway, a major north-south trunk road in China, in northern Guangdong Province has been closed to traffic due to cold weather since 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Therefore, all motor vehicles passing by will have to circumvent this section of the road to ensure safety, said traffic police with the Public Security Bureau of Shaoguan City, Guangdong. Under the impact of the strong cold air front from the north, the average daily temperature in northern Guangdong has plunged by about 10 degrees Celsius, and frost is found in northern mountainous areas. The Meihua-Daqiao section of Beijing-Zhuhai freeway is 805 meters above sea level and ice was found on the road surface Tuesday evening when the temperature fell to minus 2 degrees Celsius. The road will be opened again soon when the weather improves, said a leading local traffic police officer. The Beijing-Zhuhai freeway, to have a length of 2,317 km on completion, will connect the Chinese national capital of Beijing and Zhuhai City in south China's Guangdong Province, traversing through Beijing Municipality, and Hebei, Henan, Hubei, Hunan and Guangdong provinces. To date, construction of most of the freeway has been finished and opened to traffic. |
