Shanghai started early Monday morning to transfer another 60 flights at the Hongqiao International Airport to the Pudong Airport to make way for the maintenance of a parking apron at the Hongqiao, Beijing Morning Post reported Monday.

The maintenance will last six months. However, some flights handled by Hongqiao will be permanently transferred to Pudong, which is further away from the city's downtown area.

All the international flights currently handled by Hongqiao Airport will be transferred to the Pudong Airport by late October this year; thereafter, Hongqiao will exclusively handle domestic flights, and Pudong the international ones.

The two airports have taken emergency measures to help passengers get accustomed to the flight changes.

Passengers on flights have been informed in advance one by one on the phone by the Oriental Airlines and the Shanghai Airlines companies about the change of their embarking airport. If a passenger misses the flight because of the changes, the Hongqiao Airport is responsible to send the passenger to Pudong to take the next flight.

On Monday, all flights changed to Pudong were on domestic routes, besides those flying to the Republic of Korea.
