|
3-Apr-2002 - |
A successful operation was performed on a giant panda at the Beijing Zoo on recently. The operation lasted half an hour and seven surgeons took part, the Beijing Morning Post reported. The patient, Le Le, a 16-year-old panda, had developed an abdominal wall hernia which without treatment may have ruptured and caused intestinal necrosis. Le Le's hernia was first noticed in December last year. Since Le Le came to the zoo in 1986, she has given birth five times, for which she was honored as a "heroic panda mother." The giant panda is regarded as the most treasured species in China, and operations on the animal are meticulously carried out and usually attract widespread attention. The zoo staff are experienced in artificial breeding and in performing operations on other animals but this is the first time they have operated on a panda. One of the surgeons said that operating on the giant panda is similar to operating on a human being. |
