Train for Beijing's light rail makes debut

21-Jan-2003 -
The first passenger train especially designed for Beijing's light railway rolled off production line in Changchun, capital of northeastern Jilin province on Jan.16.

The train will make its first run in the Chinese capital on January 28, according to sources with the ChangChun Rail Passenger Train Share-holding Co., Ltd.

The train can reach a top speed of 80 kilometers per hour, according to technicians with the ChangChun company. Air-conditioning and heating systems have been installed for comfort in any season.

The ChangChun company will produce 136 such trains for Beijing, according to an agreement with Beijing Urban Railway Share-holding Co., Ltd..

Known as an "automobile city", ChangChun plays an important role in manufacturing automobiles, passenger trains and tractors.

The passenger train that rolled off the production line on Jan.16 would run on Beijing's present light rail system, stretching 40.85 kilometers from Xizhimen station to Dongzhimen station.

Construction on the project began in 1999 and the 20.61-km-longwest section of the urban railway system, from Xizhimen station to Huoying station, opened in late September 2002. The whole line is expected to go into operation on Jan. 28 this year.

Beijing boasts 54 km of subway. The total length of subway and light railway in operation is expected to reach 300 km by 2008.
