Visit for Folk's Sake in Beijing Suburb

17-Apr-2003 -
A resort within striking distance of Beijing is stepping up efforts to attract more visitors. Yanqing, already known for its section of Badaling Great Wall and Longqingxia Gorges, is now throwing the spotlight on some of its lesser-known attractions. In recent years, the area has opened many more destinations to promote its folklore culture and breathtaking scenery. Xinzaizi Village There are 25 households in the village which has become something of a countryside "hotel" for visitors to nearby travel sites. One of the main folklore attractions here are the Chinese traditional wedding ceremonies and the Ba-Ba (Eight-eight) Feast. Visitors can enjoy the whole process of an ancient Chinese-style wedding plus related performances. The Ba-Ba Feast includes eight different vegetable dishes and eight meat dishes. Vegetable are from local mountainous areas and often planted by local farmers. The most interesting scenery near the village is the Yanqing National Geological Park. Covering 226 square kilometers and consisting of abundant natural resources and rare silicified wood, the park is the only one of its kind in China. Located about 100 kilometers north of downtown Beijing, it claims unique features. The marine sediment of Gangou reproduces the impression of sea waves while the erosion of Xiaokunlun Mountain is equally eye-catching. Geological relics can be dated back 2 billion years, according to experts. Vast areas of silicified wood fossils left from the Jurassic Period can be found all over the park. To get there, take bus route 919 at Deshengmen near the north Second Ring Road to the town of Yanqing (10 yuan/US$1.2) and then take a minibus to Qianqiacun. Alternatively, drive along Badaling Highway to Yanqing and then head for Luanping. Price: Five yuan (60 US cents) for breakfast per person; 15 yuan (US$2) for lunch or dinner. Overnight stay in farmer's house: 10 yuan (US$1.2) per person per night. Tel: 6018-8022 Tel for silicified wood park 6202-3248; 6018-8559 Xiaying Village This is a fishing village hidden in the mountains. It is near the Guanting Reservoir, the second largest artificial lake in Beijing. Fishing in the lake is one interesting outdoor event there. Aside from different fish, the lake is stocked with crabs and shrimp. Donkeys are available for rides around the lake. Guyaju, an ancient dwelling, noted for its mysterious ruins is also nearby. It has been dubbed the first labyrinth in China and has a history of 1,000 years. The caves found there have a variety of shapes and consist of different styles of "rooms." Amongst the 117 dwellings you'll find doors, windows, kitchen ranges and closets, just like any regular apartment. Its origins are not known. Historical records suggest it was built between the Tang and Liao dynasties by a tribe called Xi. The ancient dwelling is located to the northwest of Yanqing County. The Jingzhang railway links it to Shanrong Tombs and Longqing Gorge. To get there, take bus 919 to the town of Yanqing and then change to 920 for Xiayingcun; or drive along Badaling Highway to Yanqing and then on to Zhangjiakou. You will find the site on the way to Zhangjiakou. Tel: 6911-0885; 6911-1088 There are also dozens of other villages in Yanqing which engage in folklore tourism.
