World Carnival Closes in Beijing
|
23-Aug-2004 - |
The World Carnival wrapped up its 52-day spin in Beijing on Sunday, with all the expected thrills, laughter, and fun of the fair. But organizers of the event say the profits were not the blockbuster they had expected. An official of the World Carnival says the final receipts and payments will be balanced, but they didn't make much profits. Organizers blamed the wet summer in Beijing. The park reported a loss of US$2.4 million on August 14 since it started operating on July 2. The carnival organizer said, "Of course we have made money, but not as much as we hoped for. It's not that the people of Beijing are not enthusiastic. The weather during our stay was really bad." Weather was not the only issue. On July 14, some games in the park were suspended on suspicions of involvement in gambling activities. Earlier, the park had hoped to delay the fair's closing date. But the plan was shelved after opposition from nearby residents who complained about noise and flashing lights at night. However, some analysts have suggested that the World Carnival announced the weak profit report in a move to evade local taxes. World Carnival had over 40,000 people visiting every day, with net income topping US$20 million. Organizers have already signed a five-year contract with the Beijing International Sculpture Park and will return to the same venue every year up till the 2008 Olympic Games. As the mobile amusement park ends its operation Sunday, it will travel to Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province in China. The park will be open to the public on September 27. Some market analysts have already started guessing how much profit the World Carnival can make in its next destination. |
