In 2008, Nanjing airport handled 8.88 million passengers and ranked 10th busiest by cargo traffic, 13th busiest by passenger traffic and 14th busiest by traffic movements in China.
Nanjing Lukou International Airport began its construction on February 28, 1995. On July 1, 1997, just around the return of Hongkong, it was put into use. On November 18,1997, it was approved by the State Council to allow the landing of foreign aircrafts.
Nanjing Lukou International Airport is an important main airport in China. It is an important cargo airport in the east of China. It has cooperation with Hongqiao Airport as alternate airport with each other for emergency. It plans to handle 360,000 vehicles and 40 million passengers annually and go through 1,000,000 tons of cargo.
The airport has runway of a 3600 meters in length and 60 meters in width and a taxiways of 3600 meters in length and 45 meters in width as well as the corresponding lighting facilities, airfield. It was designed in accordance with the 4E-scale. The terminal building covers an area of 132,000 square meters. The cargo warehouse covers an area of 41,000 square meters with the shed of 1800 square and the cargo handling courtyard of 20,000 square meters. The apron is 447,000 square meters, of which 47,000 square meters services as the cargo ramp.
Nanjing Lukou International Airport was awarded by the World Health Organization as International Healthy Airport. As result, the competitiveness of enterprises has been markedly improved. Nanjing Lukou International Airport has connected to 42 major cities, 19 international and two regional cities. There are nearly 120 routes, such as the international routes to Singapore, South Korea, Seoul, Osaka, Japan, Thailand, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Macau and other cities as well as regular indirect flights to Los Angeles, Frankfurt, London, Moscow, Vancouver and other cities via Beijing. There are also irregular charters to Kuala Lumpur, Phuket, Sabah and other places.
There are international scheduled fright flights to Nanjing, Los Angeles, Chicago, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Seoul, Singapore, Moscow, Malmo and other cities as well as regional flights to Hong Kong, Macau and Taipei.
