Shanghai Airlines (hereinafter referred to as “SAL”) was incorporated in 1985 and is China's first commercial airline of multidimensional investment. Since its foundation, SAL always adheres to the business principle of "Safety First, Passenger Priority, Quality Service and Pursuit of Excellence", pressing forward with a strategic goal to build SAL into an airline best in China, preferred by customers, with international operation.
Ratified by China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), SAL issued A-share initial public offerings (IPO) in June, 2002 and on Oct 11 in the same year was listed in the Shanghai Stock Exchange. From then on, SAL took the road to equal stress on the development of assets and capital operation.
The fleet size of SAL reach 59 aircraft, among which features Boeing 737, 757, 767, CRJ, HAWKER, MD-11, etc.. Meanwhile, SAL became one of the initial customers of Boeing 787 dreamliner, most advanced aircraft. The first delivery of Boeing 787 to SAL is due in June, 2008.
Witnessing a steadfast development in the passenger service, SAL has now a well-facilitated domestic network and also a stretch to some international and regional destinations from Shanghai such as Japan, S. Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hongkong and Macau etc.. Nowadays, SAL reaches over 140 domestic and international destinations, giving access to more than 60 large and medium-sized cities at home and abroad. In addition to the network expansion, SAL also successfully held China United Airlines.
Invested and incorporated Shanghai Cargo International Co., Ltd, SAL has been endowed with growing cargo strength. The cargo sub-company moved into operation on July 1, 2007. With 5 all-cargo freighters, it flies international and regional cargo routes such as from Shanghai to USA, Germany, Thailand, Japan, India, Vietnam and Hongkong etc.
In December, 2005, SAL was elected observer in the Star Alliance after a unanimous votes. On May 10, 2006, the "Star Alliance Welcomes Shanghai Airlines" MOU Signing Ceremony set foot on Shanghai, accordingly, Shanghai Airlines will be granted the full membership by the end 2007, announced Jaan Albrecht, CEO of Star Alliance.
SAL has achieved an outstanding safe operation performance. In 2004, it is prized with IOSA certificate issued by IATA, thus became the first airline winning such standardized award in China airline industry and even in the Northeast Asia.
Through good safety history, high service standard, advanced corporate culture and efficient management, SAL has scored satisfied both economic and social benefits. The net assets of the company are 20 times than that in the early founding stage. Prizes and honors are best award to SAL. Till now, IT has won Jinyan Cup, the top prize in China for airline safety, the first place in China's Customer Satisfaction Survey on Airlines Service and ranked first in punctuality in China’s airline industry.
SAL has been entitled with Shanghai Model Unit for six consecutive years.
