Other natural landscapes include the Huanghe River and the Helan Mountains.
With a dramatic change of the environment in modern times, the situation of
desertification has aggravated. Quite a few places of historic interest are now
buried under sand. Ruins of Heicheng, an ancient city indistinctly among sand
dunes, now are the most mysterious tourism resources.

Ruins of Heicheng:
Located on the eastern bank of the lower reaches
of the Ejin River in the Alxa League, the ruins of
Heicheng City are the best-preserved of ancient towns
on the Silk Road. Heicheng was the capital of Western
Xia Kingdoem founded by the people of the Dangxiang
tribe. The city features a gate in the middle of the
eastern and western city wall, fortified with a barbican
The city walls still stand ten meters above the ground
In the southwest outside the city, a mosque with a
vaulted roof stands intact in the wilds. There is an
area outside Heicheng. The local herdsmen refer it to
as a mysterious black sand dune.
