 Central-West Inner Mongolia Scenic Resort

Hohhot Hotels

 

Located in the central west of the Inner Mongol in Autonomous Region, the scenic resort refers to the golden triangle area formed between Hohhot. Baotou and Ordos cities. Its natural tourism resources mainly consist of a typical desert landscape, grasslands, and mountains. Of its man-made tourism resources things about the Mongolian ethinic group and lamaseries are especially outstanding The Gegen Tal Grassland and the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan are the major scenic resorts in Inner Mongolia.

Hohhot and Baotou:

Hohhot City is the capital and the political, economic, and cultural center of Inner Mongolia. Built in 1572, the city features quite a few places of Historic interest and scenic beauty such as the Tomb of Wang Zhaojun, the White Pagoda of the Liao Dynasty, ruins of the Dayao Culture, the Wuta (Five-Pagoda) Temple, and the Dazhao Lamasery.The city of Baotou in western Inner Mongolia is known as a major communications hub in the northwest and a water and land port in areas beyond the Great Wall. There are several well-known places of historic interest and scenic beauty.

Tomb of Wang Zhaojun:

It is on the bank of the Dahei River, on the southern outskirts of Hohhot City. It is the resting place of Wang Zhaojun, a maid in the imperial palace of the Western Han Dynasty (206 B. C.-A. D. 24). The body of the tomb, a rammed earthen mound, is 33 meters above the ground. In 33 B. C., during the reign of Emperor Yuandi, Wang Zhaojun volunteered to marry the chief of the then Hun tribe in the north. After her marriage, the Han and Hun ethnic groups were on friendly terms for 60 years.

Inner Mongolla Race Course:

Located on Hulun Beilu of Xincheng District, Hohhot City, the race course is the largest sports facility in Inner Mongolia and the largest race course in Asia. It consists of standard circuit race tracks, a polo course, a horsemanship demonstration ground, and a show jumping ground. It can accommodate as many as 100,000 people. A large group of yurts are put up on the lawn east of the race course, where tourists may try Mongolian-style drinks and food while watching horse race.

Dazhao Lamasery:

Located on Dazhao Qianjie in Yuquan District, Hohhot City, The lamasery was built in 1579 by Altan Khan£¬chief of the Tumd tribe. It is also called the Silver Buddha Temple because the lamasery, houses a 2.5-meter-high silver statue of the Buddha The Third Dalai Lama from Tibet once visited the Dazhao Lamasery to preside over an unveiling ceremony of the silver statue. The lamasery has a large collection of religious relics including the silver statue of the Buddha and a dragon sculpture.

Wuta Temple:

Built in 1727, the Wuta (Five-Pagoda) Temple is in Wutasi Houjie. Yuquan District, Hohhot City There are five pagodas sharing a base and a diamond throne, with an over-all height of 16.5 meters. They are straight, dignified, and elegant. The exterior of the pagodas bears 1,560 Buddhist statues in bas relief, hence the pagodas are also known as the 1, 000-Buddha pagodas.

Grand Mosque:

Located in Tongdao Nanjie in the Hui Residential District, Hohhot City, the Grand Mosque is the largest and earliest mosque in Hohhot City. It was built in the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty and rebuilt and expanded during the rule of Emperor Yongzheng and Emperor Qianlong. It is composed of the Hall of Allah, the Lecture Hall, and an ablution room. During the days of the Republic of China (1912-1949), the 36-meter-high Wangyue Tower was added.


Xiret Lamasery:

It was built in 1585 at the northern end of Shitou Lane in Yuquan District, Hohhot City. It was named after the tutor of the Fourth Dalai Lama, who was the abbot at the lamasery for a long time. The Grand Hall of Buddhist Sutra is beautifully designed with a painted gate, glazed brick walls which set off well with a giant prayer wheel, an auspicious deer, a treasured pennant, a soaring dragon, and other gilt ornaments. A square in front of the hall is flanked on either side by a pavilion housing tablets. A white marble dagoba stands 15 meters high in a courtyard on the eastern side of the square. It is the largest Lamaist dagoba in Inner Mongolia.

White Pagoda:

Built in the Liao Dynasty, the White Pagoda towers 55.5 meters high in Baita Village in the eastern suburbs of Hohhot City. It is an octagonal, pavilion-style brick and wooden structure with seven stories. A stone slab inscribed with words meaning the pagoda of ten-thousand volumes of the Garland Sutra hangs in the front side. The exterior of the pagoda bears exquisite bas-relief sculptures of Buddhist figures.


Xar Moron Grassland Scenic Resort:

It is 80 kilometers right to the north of Hohhot City. There is the Puhui Lamasery on the bank of the Xar Moron River. Built in 1769 during the Qing Dynasty, the lamasery was orginally a summer resort of the Sixth Living Buddha from the Xiret Lamasery in Hohhot .The three halls with carved beams and painted rafters look magnificent. The Xiret River flower quietly at the back. A bridge over the river leads to a mountain named Alin Obo, where tourists will have a good command of the enchanting scenery on boundless grassland.

Wudang Lamasery

The lamasery is tucked away deep in the Wudang Gully in the Yinshan Mountains to the west of Baotou City. Based on the layout of the Ta- shilhunpo Monastery in Tibet, it was built according to the terrain during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. There are 2,538 bays of halls and rooms. The major architecture includes six halls. three residences, and 94 dwelling cham-bers for the lamas. There are over 1,500 gold, silver. bronze, wooden, and clay statues of Buddhist figures.

Meidai Lamasery:

Located in the Tumd Right Banner, Baotou City, the lamasery was built by Altan Khan, the 17th generation grandson of Genghis Khan. It was once the center of activities of Altan Khan and is the only city site of Darning Jin State. It was where Altan Khan introduced Tibetan Buddhism into inner Mongolia. Its major structures include the Mahavira Hall, the Glazed Hall, the Naiqiong Temple, the Dalai Monastery£¬and the Taihou Hall.


Mausoleum of Genghis Khan:

Located in Ordos City, the mausoleum is composed of three yurt-style buildings with glazed tiles. The main building consists of a gate pavilion in the style of a Yuan-Dynasty city gate tower and three inter-connected yurt-shaped halls. The main hall is connected with the eastern,western,and back halls by two corridors.In the front of the main hall stands a five-meter-high white marble statue of Genhis Khan, and the back hall houses coffins containing the remains of Genghis Khan and his wife. Coffins of his son and the son's wife are in the eastern hall. Memorial activities are held there every year by people of the Darhut tribe, descendants of Genghis Khan. Demonstrations of the Yuan-Dynasty court feast and wedding ceremonies are also held at irregular intervals. In the year 2000, the mausoleum was appraised as a 4A national scenic resort.

Sounding Sand Bay:

The Sounding Sand Bay is located on the Northern fringe of the Ordos Hobq Desert in the Dalaid Banner,45 kilometers from Baotou City The sand dune is 90 meters high and has a slope of 45 degrees. When people are sliding down the slope from the top, the sand under them produces a rumbling sound. Visitors to the Sounding Sand Bay can do sand-sliding in a boat-shaped device, ride a camel, or watch ethnic song and dance performances.

Gegen Tal Grassland Scenic Center:

It is a 4A nation al-class scenic resort 138 kilometers from Hohhot City. There, tourists will be able to admire the enchanting scenery of the grassland bestowed by nature, visit herdsmen's families, and learn the customs and practices in areas north of the Great Wall. They can ride a horse or a camel, take a lele cart: practice archery: watch Mongolian-style wrestling or horse race: or join the local Mongolians in singing and dancing at a bonfire evening party.

Huiten Xil Grassland Scenic Resort:

It is on the Huiten Xil Grassland in the central south of the Qahar Right-Wing Central Banner in the Ulanqab League, 135 kilometers from Hohhot City. From May to September every year, grass grows luxuriantly and flowers are in full blossom on the grassland. The scenic resort is on a lava tableland, and the terrain is full of ups and downs. Lakes that have appeared in the low-lying places look like pieces of sappire inlaid in the grassland. There are several yurt-style holiday in ns on the grasslands.
