"Hangzhou is the most charming and splendid city I've known in the world",
Marco Polo acknowledged as he paid a visit to Hangzhou in the 13th century, Hangzhou boasts its past, and still, the present as well.
Located in the north of the coastal Zhejiang province, Hangzhou is the provincial capital. It covers an area of 430 sqkms and has 5 districts:
the Upper town, Downtown, the-Lake, Jianggan and Gongshu. The city
population is 1, 5000, 000. Historically one of the seven national Capitals (Hangzhou-the
Capital of the Southern Song Dynasty A. D. 1127-1279), Hangzhou is well-known among the Chinese as "A Paradise on Earth". The West Lake District
a coded national scenic area that spreads as large as 60 sqkms to the
west of city, consists of 60 sites of scenic, historical as well as
cultural interests, which attracts tens of millions of national
and international tourists yearly.
A tour to Hangzhou is easy and convenient.
Not only are there railway, highway and waterway
(Hangzhou is the southern terminal of the Grand
Canal) networks that connect every part of the
province with the neighboring provinces, but the
Jianqiao Airport, provides airline service each
week to Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin, Kunming, Guangzhou,
Hong Kong, Xiamen, Wuhan, Chengdu, Shenyang etc.

Besides, Hangzhou is the hometown of silk
tea, and souvenirs in terms of arts and crafts are
abundant. The local cuisine is also specially
favored, such as "Shelled fresh shrimps
cooked with the green tea leaves".
Hangzhou's GNP ranks among the top of
the major cities in China. Textile, machinery and
electronics arc its major industries. A promising economy with
better city microstructures, high-tech, man-power connect ration, up-to-date
communication systems and a nature market, has made Hangzhou a hotpot for foreign investment in recent years. Three or more investment zones have been already
established (see the map, right).
