Located at the southern end of the Grand
Canal, 151km. away from Shanghai, Hangzhou
is one of China's Key Scenic Tourist Cities and
one of the seven ancient capital cities. The
Wuyue Kingdom and the Southern Song Dynasty had their capitals here in Hangzhou
for as long as 223 years out of the 2200 years
of the city's history. The 13th Italian traveler
Marco Polo once remarked that Hangzhou was
the finest and most splendid city in the world.
Under its administration, there are altogether 6
districts and 7 counties(Fuyang, Tonglu, Jiande,
Chun'an, Lin'an, Xiaoshan, Yuhang), with a
total area of 16, 596km2 and a population of
6, 050, 000. The city proper covers an area of
683 km2 with a population of 1, 680, 000. It has
a mild climate with four distinct seasons. The
annual average temperature is 16. 20C. The
annual average precipitation is 1, 500 mm.
Hangzhou is blessed with natural beauty
and is renowned as "earthly paradise". The two
national scenic areas--the West Lake and the
Fuchun-Xin'an River, the four national forest
parks-The Thousand-isle Lake,
Mt . Daqishan, Mt. Wuchaoshan and
Fuchunjiang, the two national natural
preserves-- Mt. Tianmu and Mt. Qingliangfeng,
and the Zhijiang National Tourist Resort Area
all fall within its vicinity. It has wonderful
ecological resources represented by Lin'an, the
"National Eco-construction Demonstration
Area".
